Charles Wilson Peale (1741-1827) was a famous American portrait painter who lived in Philadelphia. He painted the earliest known portrait of George Washington. In 1784 Peale established what he called "Peale's Museum," which was moved to Independence Hall in 1804. In addition to portraits of eminent Americans, the museum exhibited Indian relics, wax dummies, and specimens of natural history, including the skeleton of a mastodon.
